No—the research does not show an increase in the risk of hypertension, or high blood pressure in the long term, though you may see a temporary increase in blood pressure after drinking coffee.
A meta-analysis of 13 studies actually found a 7% decrease in the risk of high blood pressure for coffee drinkers. (A meta-analysis examines data from multiple independent studies on the same subject to identify broader trends.)
Additionally, “moderate regular coffee consumption (three to four cups per day) does not adversely affect blood pressure and the cardiovascular system and can be moderately beneficial,” according to the International Society of Hypertension. This assessment was included in a published set of lifestyle management recommendations that were also endorsed by the World Hypertension League and European Society of Hypertension.
